Winter Solstice (Chinese: 冬至) is the 22nd solar term of the year, and begins this year on December 22. On the Winter Solstice itself, the sun shines directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, therefore it has the shortest daylight in the whole year in the northern hemisphere.
The Winter Solstice period signifies the arrival of the Chinese New Year.
There was a saying in South China that "Winter solstice is no less important than the Spring Festival", and this solar term is a day for family reunions in Guangdong. People often gather with their family and friends to celebrate the Winter Solstice. On that evening, people will bring their hometown specialties or favorite ingredients to make a hot pot together. Whether the hot pot is filled with chicken, goose, lamb, beef, or seafood, the coziness and laughter rising with the steam will warm the longest and coldest night of the year.
