"When everybody comes together with different resources and the willingness to make a change for the community, this is what we call community transformation," said Malaysian graphic designer Joseph Foo when introducing the community project of the Guangzhou Design Triennial 2024.
The Guangzhou Design Triennial 2024, with the theme of "Warm-beings," is currently underway at the Guangdong Museum of Art (GDMoA) in Guangzhou. Joseph Foo, the co-founder and president of KongsiKL, is the curator of the Triennial's community project.

The project selects a total of 16 community projects in Guangdong to showcase the role that design plays in improving the community, featuring stamp collecting activities, sharing events, co-design workshops, and community tours.
Foo emphasized that designers or experts need to engage with the community and understand how design can bring about community transformation, rather than doing it on their own. "When design changes for something better, that's warmth," Foo said.
The designer pointed out that the Guangzhou Design Triennial is not just about design that brings about changes; it is also about how design touches people, contributes to communities, makes changes in different parts of society, preserves the good of the past, and illustrates the future of mankind.
"This is actually something that I have not seen for a long time, focusing on design for the betterment of mankind in general," Foo added.
