Off the coast of Xiamen lies Kulangsu, an island known for its music, architecture, and relaxed pace of life. The island's winding streets are lined with historic villas, small shops, and cafés, while melodies from pianos—Kulangsu's signature sound—float through the air.
With the opening of a commercial port in Xiamen in 1843 and the establishment of the island as an international settlement in 1903, Kulangsu became home to foreign consulates and trading houses. In 2017, "Kulangsu, a Historic International Settlement" was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for being "an important window for Sino-foreign exchanges" and "an exceptional example of the cultural fusion that emerged from these exchanges, which remain evident in its urban fabric."
