Quanzhou's Zhongshan Road is one of the best-preserved streets of arcade-style buildings (known as "qilou") in China. Renovated in the early 20th century, the two-kilometer road is lined with terraced shops below and residences above, providing both shelter and convenience for pedestrians. This architectural style reflects southern China's ingenuity in adapting to heat and rain.
Today, Zhongshan Road remains a hub for business and daily life. As you stroll beneath the arcades, you'll find traditional shops selling antiques, snack stalls serving Minnan specialties, and fruit peddlers calling out to passersby. It is a must-visit if you want to soak up the authentic local vibe.
