“This submerged connection project requires high accuracy during the construction process. The high-precision digging and dredging of the deep-sea tunnel trench has rarely been seen in China. The quality control standards have gone far beyond those in traditional dredging,” said Ma Dingqiang, Project Manager of Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, China Communications Construction Company's Guangzhou Waterway Bureau Co., Ltd.

As the first step of the deep-sea project, the dredging work is very challenging against extremely deep sludge, sub-sea hard rocks, DCM (Deep Cement Mixing) piles and other complex geological conditions.

However, after more than 1,400 days and nights, construction workers successfully dug a foundation trench undersea between the eastern and western artificial islands. The trench is about 5 kilometers long and 330 meters wide.

The 6.8-kilometer undersea tunnel consists of 32 immersed tubes and one final closure joint. It is known as the world's widest immersed tunnel. So far, 26 immersed tubes weighing about 80,000 tons have been embedded.

This dredging milestone will lay a solid foundation for the Link to achieve the goal of opening to traffic in 2024, boost the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and build a 100-kilometer "Golden Inner Bay" around the Pearl River Estuary.
