| 鈼 According to a schedule formulated by the departments in charge of environmental protection in the cities of Guangzhou and Foshan, streams running through the administrative areas of the two cities are to be made free of pollution by June, 2010. Additionally, recycling of oil vapors are to be completed by the two cities before the 16th Asian Games are to be held and it is mandated that the two cities shall be free of vehicles that, at well, fail to meet standards of environment protection.
鈼 Seven neighboring areas between Guangzhou and Foshan, including Liwan, Baiyun, Nanhai, Huadu, Sanshui, Panyu and Shunde districts, shared between the two cities, have made detailed plans on joint environment protection programs.
鈼 Another focus of the cooperation is the desulfurization and prevention of pollution caused by Volatile Organic Compounds.
Recently, the first joint conference on the subject was held focusing on air quality and protection of water resources in western Guangzhou, specifically relating to the forthcoming 16th Asian Games.
Both parties agreed to establish a special team to monitor the application of the standards. Moreover, they reached agreement on cooperative systems for the special team and for the major projects related to environmental protection in 2009, as well as in the following three-year period.
According to Ding Hongdu, the Director of the Bureau of Environmental Protection for the Guangzhou Municipality, in addition to the joint conference, other initiatives, including joint investigations, information sharing programs, joint inspections of major projects and cooperative supervision of air and water sources, as well as rivers, in the two cities are to be included as priority programs.
Mr. Hu Xihuai, Director of the Bureau of the Environmental Protection of the Foshan Municipality, said that Foshan will actively cooperate with Guangzhou in projects concerning air quality and environmental protection of water resources.
