Sun Yat-sen University involved in R&D of instruments onboard U.S. space shuttle

"Alpha Magnetic Spectrograph II", a space particle probe, is being assembled.

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrograph (AMS), a particle probe, is used to examine antimatters and dark matters and to explore the origins and unknown parts of the universe. The AMS Program is a mega international research project supervised by Nobel laureate Professor Chao Chung Ting and involves, involving 1,500 scientists and engineers from 56 research institutes in 16 countries and regions around the world. Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou is involved in the R&D of the Silicon Micro Path Probe Thermal Control System, which is designed to provide a highly steady and uniform thermal environment for AMS's silicon micro path probe. The university is the only Chinese higher-learning institution involved in AMS's R&D of space experiment devices. and 1,500 scientists and engineers.

The 20-year-old U.S. Space Shuttle Endeavor flied to the skies at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on May 16 in its 25th and last space mission. The mission of the space shuttle is to deliver the "Alpha Magnetic Spectrograph II", a space particle probe, to an international space station.
