Guangdong officials on April 18 signed a cooperative memorandum with the State Ministry of Water Resources to promote the province’s reform and development in water conservation.

According to Guangdong Governor Huang Huahua, the province will accelerate anti-disaster projects, water resource allocation, farmland irrigation and water conservancy and clean drinking water projects in rural areas.

The province will also tighten water resources administration and supervision systems, and build up a mechanism to provide steady investment in water conservation projects. The average annual investment over the next 10 years is ecpected to double that of 2010, said Governor Huang.

Huang added that Guangdong will initiate a unified management system of water resources in rural and urban areas. Guangdong officials plan to divert fresh water from the western Xijiang River to the eastern Pear River Delta in order to ease the severe drought in the region. The projects will last three years with a total investment of 23.6 billion yuan, according to an unnamed official with the local Water Conservation Authority.
