The Health Department of Guangdong Province reported one locally contracted dengue fever case in Guangzhou on April 11. So far, Guangdong has reported a total of 22 cases of dengue fever this year, with one locally contracted case and 21 imported cases.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne, potentially fatal disease that affects between 50 and 100 million people in tropical and subtropical regions every year, causing fever, muscle and joint aches.

With the number of mosquitoes climbing amid rising temperatures in Guangdong, local authorities launched a mosquito eradication campaign from April 13 to lower the possibility of infections.

Health officials said that people can prevent mosquito bites by leaving no water in saucers underneath flower pots and wearing clothing that fully covers the skin.
