The GDP of Guangdong Province will exceed 3000 billion RMB this year, up 14.5 percent year on year, the province see a rational and healthy economic and social development in 2007, said Wang Yang, Party secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the CPC, on the second plenary session of the tenth CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee held on Dec. 25 and 26.
Wang Yang said the provincial financial revenue was expected to exceed 700 billion yuan this year, and the import and export value would hit 630 billion USD.
Wang Yang set the target next year of increasing the provincial GDP by 9% and cutting energy consumption per GDP unit by 3.5%, cutting the emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 4% and 3.5% respectively.
Wang Yang urged the governments of the province to further the process of reform and opening up and make new breakthrough in pratising the concept of scientific development in the coming year.
Main tasks for the province next year were listed in the session, they are:
- Continue to lead the country in reform and opening up process
- Speed up the development mode switch
- Better the socialist democratic politics construction and the protection of the people鈥檚 related rights
- Improve the local culture section
- Improve the local residents鈥 daily life quality
- Continue the Party organization improvement
In the second day of the session, participants focused on the discussion of drinking water shortage, energy saving and talent issues of the province.
Facing Drinking Water Shortage
The increasing imbalance in development among regions of Guangdong causes great pressure on environment. For example, many rivers in Chaozhou and Shantou, East Guangdong, are polluted, and in this area, only Hanjiang river can provide drinking water. As the province has launched a campaign to speed up East Guangdong鈥檚 development this year, the demand for drinking water will increase in the future. The drinking water shortage problem is now on the top of local governments鈥 work chart.
Energy Saving and Emission Reduction
Guangdong is in critical period of adjusting industrial structure and transforming economic growth way, which led to great pressure on energy saving.
The province is now expanding heavy industry, including automobile, petrochemical, steel, shipbuilding, papermaking, and equipment manufacturing, etc. And effective supervision mechanism on environmental protection and energy saiving should be established as soon as possible.
Talents
The province should establish reasonable and effective 鈥淭alent Evaluation and Performance Evaluation system鈥. At the same time, the province also should improve the public service for talents.
