Budget airlines are gradually adding flights at Shenzhen International Airport, creating an increasing presence there and adding options for travelers.

Shanghai-based Spring Airlines, the first budget airline in China, is scheduled to begin offering nonstop flights from Shenzhen to Shenyang, Hangzhou and Zhangjiakou on Friday. The minimum fare will be 199 yuan (US$33), the Daily Sunshine reported Thursday.

The airline also plans to open flights between Shenzhen and Guiyan in March, and could add Shenzhen flights to Bali later this year, potentially for just a few hundred yuan.

Four budget airlines are offering new flights at Shenzhen’s airport, including AirAsia and Singapore’s Tiger Airways, which carried a combined total of 1.25 million passengers last year, nearly 4 percent of the airport’s total.

The operator of Shenzhen’s airport will soon start researching potential construction of a terminal specifically for budget airlines, the paper said.

The operator and several budget airlines have agreed to schedule most budget flights before 8 a.m. or after 11 p.m., and primarily offer routes to international destinations or domestic third- or fourth-tier cities.

The airport’s operator also said it will facilitate an agreement with city government to get subsidies for budget airlines.

“A terminal for budget airlines would bring us new development opportunities,” Spring Airlines spokesperson Zhang Wu’an said.

Zhang said a new terminal could attract budget airlines from China and abroad and potentially make Shenzhen a low-cost transfer hub in southern China.
