French designer Jean-Joseph Jerome Jude is displaying four photo compositions at the Shenzhen Museum at the Citizens' Center through Saturday (Nov 28) , part of the Second International Sister Cities Cultural and Art Week.

Also known as J-Rom, the graphic designer, who has been based in Nuremberg, Germany, for 10 years, is in town together with 70 artists from seven of Shenzhen's sister and friendship cities of Houston (the United States), Samara (Russia), La Vienne (France), Turin (Italy), Lome (Togo), Kwangyang (South Korea) and Nuremberg.

Titled "Raetsel" ( "puzzle" or "riddle" in English), the cross-cultural exhibition showcases four photo compositions, representing Shenzhen, La Vienne, Nuremberg and Erlangen, respectively. Riddles in Chinese, German and French are integrated in each of the artworks.

"Raetsel is an enigma which prompts us to find a solution through communication and openness towards other people. In this way, Raetsel unites people from different cultures through their view of the world and their common way of finding the solution", said Jude.

Unlike traditional exhibitions in which artworks are hung on the walls, the four exhibits are laid on the ground. "We put them on the same level to express that all the sister cities are equal", said Martien Schrooten, scenographer of the Raetsel project.

The most impressive exhibit is a photo composition of Shenzhen Bay Bridge created by Jude in 2007 from a photo taken by Swedish photographer Richard From, showing three different paths from Shenzhen to Hong Kong.

"The concept of the exhibition is to build a bridge between cultures and languages", said Jude.

Since 2006, the designer has created more than 30 photo compositions of 30 different cities. He said his inspiration for the project originated from a gift he received from a friend in 2005. "It was a puzzle and if you want to find a solution, you needed to speak to somebody who could help you solve the puzzle", said Jude.

The 70 artists will bring a variety of shows and exhibitions to the city this week. Last night, Shenzhen Acting Mayor Wang Rong met with the artists.
