World Health Organization officials on May 27 said that a Korean who had contracted with MERS virus entered Huizhou in east Guangdong, via Hong Kong. The Health Department of Huizhou sent the Korean man to a hospital and started treatment in isolation.

Thirty-five people are reported to have had contact with the Korean man and so far none of them have presented MERS symptoms.

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is a viral respiratory illness that is new to humans. It was first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and has since spread to several other countries. Most people infected with MERS-CoV developed severe acute respiratory illness, including fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Many of them have died.
