Guangdong enjoyed stable maritime environment in 2014

Guangdong enjoyed stable maritime environment, and the water quality in 89.4% of all offshore areas reached the standard in 2014. But Guangdong suffered great damages by oceanic diasters, causing economic damages about 6.041 billion yuan, ranking Top 1 in China, according to the the Bulletin on the State of Maritime Environment of Guangdong Province in 2014 and the Bulletin on the Maritime Diaster of Guangdong Province in 2014, released yesterday in Guangzhou.

The bulletins showed that Guangdong was influenced mainly by storm surges and water diasters. In 2014 Guangdong was affected by 3 big storm surges, Typhoon Hagibis, Typhoon Rammasun and Typhoon Sea Gull. Besides, red tide accidents were also important causing factors. In 2014 there were 14 red tide accidents with the affecting areas of 684 square kilometers. In recent 10 years the averaging number of red tide accidents are around 10.

Wen Bin, the director of the Administration of Ocean and Fisheries of Guangdong Province, emphasized that since three Free Trade Zones in Guangdong are all near the sea, in order to protect maritime environment better, they will provide better guidance and services on planning and usage of sea area to the enterprises in Nansha, Hengqin and Qianhai Free Trade Zone, and make sure the oceanic transportation for maritime economic development.

Wen added that they will strictly evaluate all sea-use projects in Guangdong including those in Free Trade Zones. Any projects planned in eco-fragile regions and ecologically sensitive regions should be strictly checked before getting the permission. Meanwhile, they also insisted long-time follow-ups for major projects, and online monitoring in the period of projects construction and operation.

Wen said that in recent years they have started reinstatement work in Pearl River estuary and bank areas around it, trying to coordinate the coastal wetlands and marine ecological parks in three Free Trade Zones. Now the national demonstration area of maritime ecological civilization is under construction in Zhuhai Hengqin Free Trade Zone.

At the same time, these years Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau have established a special working team for maritime ecological environmental protection. The working team holds meetings regularly and set a fixed channel for regularly informing. Besides, Guangdong cooperated with ASEAN closely on maritime environmental protection also.
