The upcoming Maker Week will feature two “brainstorm” contests that require participants to think of an idea and turn it into a real product within 48 hours.

The brainstorm contests, the Global Makers Marathon and Global Makers Contest, will be held during the Shenzhen International Maker Week. The event will be held at the Shenzhen SHIP Software Industry Base and at seven subvenues across the city between June 18 and 22.

At the Global Makers Marathon, to be held at Sino-Finland Design Park in Futian Free Trade Zone between June 20 and 22, engineers, programmers, designers and innovators will form teams to turn an idea into a concrete product in 48 hours. Teams will use 3-D printers and other materials.

In another contest to be held at the I-Park in Nanshan District between June 18 and 21, 12 maker teams will be required to bring an idea into reality within 48 hours and exhibit the final product to judges, an audience and online viewers.

At this year’s Shenzhen International Maker Week, 14 activities including the Maker Faire and Fab Lab will be held to encourage entrepreneurship, according to a press conference held yesterday.

The Maker Week, organized by the Shenzhen Municipal Government and the Ministry of Science and Technology, is expected to attract 100,000 visitors.

About 700 makers are expected to participate from 60 agencies overseas.

“The Maker Faire, which will be staged between June 19 and 21 at the software base, will display maker products such as wearables, robots and 3-D printers at 200 booths. Makers will show, explain and demonstrate their products,” said Lu Jian, head of the city’s science and innovation commission.

Maker groups in Shenzhen have been increasing in recent years with more than 10,000 people who are actively involved in maker activities. The city now has around 40 agencies offering services for makers.
