On May 24, 19 national academicians gave suggestions on Guangdong's innovation on a forum covering issues of high-end industry, scientific cooperation and transportation, etc.
Innovation in new industry:
GD should promote the industrialization of new material
In order to industrialize new material industry, Guangdong should focus on taking advantage of some special technologies and materials such as panel display technology, the third generation of semiconductor materials and photonic chips, said by Gan Yong, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Gan said, developing advanced semiconductor materials is quite important for Guangdong. By making using of 450mm-size silicon chip and the third generation of semiconductor, Guangdong will be able to enhance its core competitiveness in information industry.
Beisides, according to Shen Xiaowei, the director of IBM Research - China, Guangdong ought to seek new development model under the “New Normal” economic situation. He mentioned that it is essential to find a way of integrating Internet technology with other fields in society.
Innovation in scientific cooperation:
Scientific cooperation with HK and Macao needs more support
Zhong Nanshan, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, pointed out that there are still institutional barriers for Guangdong on scientific cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao.
For instance, since scientific research institutions and researchers form HK and Macao are still regarded as “overseas” , and there are strict regulation for a joint project of HK and Macao. Moreover, importing scientific equipments from Hong Kong is expensive because of high tariff.
Hence, Zhong suggested that government could give HK and Macao researchers equal rights as their mainland counterparts. And he suggested the State Council to release specific guideline to promote cooperation among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao on transit, taxation and funds application, etc.
