Can the 1000 sq.m. temporary medical emergency center (dubbed as "120 center", for the medical emergency call ins 120 in the whole Guangdong) of Guangzhou meet the need for 2010 Asian Games? The answer is no. Yesterday, Huang Jionglie, the director general of the city's public sanitary administration, said a new 120 center, twice as large as the current one, will be built in downtown, near the Dongshan Kou underground station.
Guangzhou 120 center was established in 1989. The work load of the unit continued to grow along with the city's expansion in population and territory. Currently, the "120"medical emergency lines received 3000-4000 calls per day. And the ambulance's workload are increasing by 20 percent annually.
Besides the new 120 center, to get prepared for the 2010 Asian Games in the city, Guangzhou started to improve its 120 medical emergency management units. Huadu, Panyu, Conghua and Zengcheng Districts, where the 120 units are still affiliated to the local hospitals, will establish independent 120 units. The work will be completed by 2009.
