The annual OCT-LOFT Jazz Festival, featuring over 80 musicians from all over the world, is being held at OCT-LOFT until Oct. 30.
This week’s lineup includes LEON+ band from Switzerland (Oct. 13), Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet from the Netherlands (Oct. 14), Cromatik 5 from Croatia (Oct. 15), Sinne Eeg from Denmark (Oct. 16), Imagination Quartet from Poland (Oct. 18) and Steve Buchanan from America (Oct. 19). LEON+ will play at Old Heaven Book Store while other artists will perform at B10 Live.
LEON+ is an improvised industrial-noise quartet, and its members are Raphael Ortis (bass), Louis Schild (bass), Antoine Lang (vocal/electronics) and David Meier (drums).
Eeg is considered a major talent and has received a number of highly positive reviews from international press. Her 2007 album “Waiting for Dawn” won her the Danish Music Awards prize in the category of vocal jazz album of the year. The clarity of her very natural tone gives her that distinction.
Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet consists of Yuri Honing (saxophone), Wolfert Brederode (piano), Gulli Gudmundsson (bass) and Joost Lijbaart (drums). Honing is one of the Netherlands’ most important saxophone players, with touring experience in over 80 countries and a discography of almost 30 titles. In 2012, Honing was awarded the Boy Edgar Prize, the most prestigious jazz prize in the Netherlands.
Cromatik 5 is a young band that was established in 2010. Jazz guitarist Pavle Jovanovic, saxophonist Grgur Savic and drummer Bojan Krhlanko formed a quartet with double bassist Zvonimir Sestak. From the first rehearsal, the band started to compose music, creating their own sound with roots in improvised music, avant-garde, groove music and rock music. Along with their own music, they perform jazz of the 1960s and include the originals of John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson and Charles Mingus in their own arrangements. After a dozen concerts in Austria, Slovenia and Croatia, the quartet expanded to a quintet with a pianist Zvjezdan Ruzic to add more variety in their sound.
In 2013, Ruzic was substituted with Hrvoje Galler on piano and the band started to prepare new material for their first recording, entitled “Cromatik 5,” which was released in summer 2014.
