Situated to the north of Guangzhou's city center and near the southern foothills of Baiyun Mountain, Luhu Park, meaning "Lake at Foothill," has long been hailed as an oasis for city residents.
As parks play an indispensable part of a city, so do lakes and mountains. With a perfect combination of both, Luhu Park is an ideal destination to stroll, meditate and relax. At 2.5 million square meters, one tenth of the park is covered by wetlands, while hills and grassland cover another 10,000 square meters. In earlier days, people would enjoy a barbecue, go boating and skate in the park. Today, favorite activities include jogging or exercising along the lakeside hiking track, with the colorful bauhinia blooming on both sides.
Since the opening of Guangzhou Luhu Golf and Country Club in 1996 and the Guangzhou Museum of Art in 2000, visitors are welcome by a feeling of vintage and modernity, as well as sport and art.
Besides the contemporary characteristics of the park, Luhu also is a great place to appreciate traditional and unique Cantonese style. Built in 1948, this well-known green retreat has witnessed the development of the city and the changes in people's daily lives over the past half century. Visitors can observe several examples of historical architecture in the park, the oldest being Jufangyuan Garden. This botanical garden consists of the five-story Hao Lou and the Cuiyunting Pagoda at the Dahonghao hilltop overlooking the lake and the city. Right next to the garden lies the Xinghai Yuan, a memorial park for a famous musician, Xian Xinghai.
You'll also be able to sample fantastic Cantonese cuisine in Luhu Park. You can enjoy the traditional Cantonese way of Yum Cha and cuisine at Zhengda Fangyuan, a restaurant decorated with antiques that formerly was an old Daoism temple named Baiyun Xianguan. The time-honored Luming Restaurant, located along the lake, is another great choice for Cantonese cuisine. Also, if you're adventurous enough, Zanxiangguan's preparation of a kind of scorpion soup is awaiting you.
