As a musical ambassador of Hannover and Lower Saxony, the NDR Radio Philharmonie enjoys an excellent reputation going far beyond the broadcasting area of the North German broadcasting company (NDR). Regular broadcasts, guest performance tours and tours abroad as well as, not least, countless CD productions, provide continuous evidence of the artistic quality and international standing of the orchestra which is based in the capital city of the state of Lower Saxony. In 2010, the NDR Radio Philharmonie celebrated its 60th birthday.

Founded in 1950, the orchestra developed an exceptionally diverse profile due to the special requirements of radio broadcasting: The artistic work of the NDR Radio Philharmonie incorporates not only the classical-romantic repertoire of symphonic masterpieces but also early music, neglected yet extraordinary contemporary works, even ambitious, intelligent crossover projects and the broad field of film music, the latter also in national and international cinema productions. Eivind Gullberg Jensen, one of the most highly esteemed conductors of the younger generation, became Chief Conductor of the orchestra since 2009 after Eiji Oue, who decisively shaped the NDR Radio Philharmonie during the decade of his work with them and who remains close to the orchestra as honorary conductor. Numerous outstanding soloists have also appeared with the orchestra in recent years - exceptional musicians including Anne-Sophie Mutter, Gidon Kremer, Rudolf Buchbinder, Sabine Meyer and Frank Peter Zimmermann.

Conductor: Lawrence Foster

American conductor Lawrence Foster has been the music director of the Gulbenkian Orchestra of Lisbon since 2002. He has served as music director of the Orchestre National de Montpellier and the Opéra National de Montpellier 2009. In February 2012, Foster was announced as the next music director of l'Opéra de Marseille and the Orchestre philharmonique de Marseille. He is particularly noted as an interpreter of the works of George Enescu, and has made a comprehensive survey of commercial recordings of Enescu's music.
