Ten French words, mainly borrowed words, are exposited to raise people’s awareness of French and publicize French culture during the Francophonie Festival in March every year. 2017 sees the 15th edition of the exposition of the 10 words (“dis-moi dix mots”).
This year, through ten specially chosen French words, the exposition shows you how French adapts to the development, innovation and evolution of science, technology and electronics applications.

The ten words are AVATAR, CANULAR, ÉMOTICÔNE, FAVORI, FURETEUR, HÉBERGER, NOMADE, NUAGE, PIRATE, and TÉLÉSNOBER. Almost all these words are derived from network information field or physical world.
French also borrows words from other languages to enrich itself and form new words. As the development of network information technology, French keeps pace with the times as well. Not only its usage but also its words evolve at the mean time.

For example, émoticône means sending meme to express feeling, and télésnober refers to people who are addicted to computer or smart phone and neglect their chat mates in the real life.
From the exposition, not only can you learn the words from well-designed display boards, you can also scan the QR codes on the boards to read detailed explanations in both French and Chinese and watch interesting videos about the words in French.
Free French classes
Alliance Française de Canton is also offering free French class at 3:00 pm on Saturday twice a month in the first half year of 2017. There are only 20 spots for each class. Reservation is needed in advance. First come, first serve.
