Calligraphy and painting masterpieces by local artist on display at Guangdong Museum

A special calligraphy and painting exhibition kicked off at the Guangdong Museum on March 28 and will run through May 19.

The exhibition, entitled "Our Magnificent Homeland: Calligraphy and Painting Donation Exhibition of Ren Zhenhan", offers visitors a rare opportunity to appreciate the masterpieces of Chinese painting and calligraphy by Ren Zhenhan, a well-known Hong Kong painter who originated from Huadu District, Guangzhou.

The exhibition systematically displays Ren Zhenhan's paintings depicting magnificent landscapes, artworks collaborated with friends, and paintings donated by friends, etc. The most important exhibit is the nearly 35-meter-long "Ten Thousand Miles of the Yangtze River" by Ren Zhenhan, which is projected and displayed in a loop in a digital way.

Ren Zhenhan was deaf due to illness in his childhood, but he overcame myriad obstacles to succeed in the fields of calligraphy and painting creation, art criticism, and historical novels.

In the 1950s, Ren undertook the appraisal task during the rescue and return of the national treasure "Five Oxen", the oldest Chinese painting on paper. He also encouraged his friend, Hong Kong collector Yang Quan, to donate more than 5,500 pieces (sets) of cultural relics to the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government.

In 2023, Ren Zhenhan's immediate family members donated 92 pieces of Ren Zhenhan's calligraphy, paintings, and related works to the Guangdong Museum. This is the largest donation of collections received by the Guangdong Museum from Hong Kong in recent years.

In addition to calligraphy and paintings, visitors can catch a glimpse of the artist through seals, stationery items, letters, manuscripts, and books. As sign language is an important way for Ren Zhenhan to communicate in life and art, the museum will work with the Guangzhou City Polytechnic to launch sign language classes to give the audience a different viewing experience.
