The first phase of the 136th Canton Fair will be held from October 15 to October 19. How about coming to a show to relax after work? Here is a calendar of upcoming performances in Guangzhou during this time. Let us have a taste of Guangzhou's traditional opera, Lingnan musical culture, and the concerts of internationally renowned masters.

Love in the Bamboo Grove (Cantonese Opera)

Inspired by the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove during the Wei and Jin dynasties, this story tells of the romantic journeys of their descendants. The storyline is full of twists and turns, preserving the traditional charm of Cantonese opera while cleverly intertwining ancient love stories with modern life philosophies, thanks to the skillful arrangement by playwright Du Guowei. The production premiered at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, receiving unanimous acclaim from both critics and audiences.

Secret Garden Concert

The renowned Norwegian group Secret Garden, consisting of composer and pianist Rolf Løvland and Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry, won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1995 with their instrumental song "Nocturne." Their 2001 song "You Raise Me Up" has gained global fame.

New Voice of Guangdong IV - New Classic Chamber Music Concert of Guangdong

Lingnan musical culture is a rich treasure trove. This performance is part of the 2024 Guangdong Arts Season organized by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism. It will showcase a series of outstanding works by contemporary composers selected from submissions this year. All pieces selected feature excellence in Chinese chamber music in the style of Lingnan.

Tang Muhai & Harbin Symphony Orchestra - Concert of Russian Music

Tang Muhai, the artistic director of the Harbin Symphony Orchestra and a Chinese master conductor, will perform classic works including Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy Overture," TH 42, offering the audience a concert of Russian music. The Harbin Symphony Orchestra, established in 1908, is China's first symphony orchestra.

Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio (Jazz Piano)

Tsuyoshi Yamamoto is regarded as a living legend of Japanese jazz and one of Japan's master jazz pianists. In August 1974, the legendary Japanese jazz label Three Blind Mice released his classic album "Misty", which is one of the few classic works in the history of Japanese jazz. This renowned piano trio will make its debut at the Guangzhou Jazz Festival.
