On November 18, "Yue: The Way of Moving", a modern dance piece inspired by Cantonese opera, premiered at the Guangdong Art Theatre, marking the inauguration of the 20th Guangdong Modern Dance Festival. As a part of the 15th Guangdong Arts Festival, the event will continue until November 24, featuring over 60 dance performances from home and abroad.
This year's festival comprises four main sections: "Dance Stagecraft Gatherings", "Youth Dance Showcase", "GBA DanceFest", and "Master Class & Sharing Session." The "Dance Stagecraft Gatherings" part highlights five remarkable dance performances, such as "Winterreise" by Tanz Harz from Germany and "Trinity" by the Jin Xing Dance Theatre. This section offers a platform for emerging dancers to display their individuality and talent alongside masterful dance interpretations.
The festival has also solicited numerous original dance works from university students and other young dancers, which will be presented at the "Youth Dance Showcase" segment, along with the broadcasting of 12 videos of outstanding original dance works.
Additionally, the "GBA DanceFest" section spotlights artists and teams from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). Among these, some Macao dancers draw inspiration from Chinese dance traditions and local life, demonstrating the diversity of their dance pieces. Notably, on the afternoon of November 20, artists will present a free outdoor modern dance show for visitors at the Yongqing Fang scenic area.
"Master Class & Sharing Session" stands as one of the most popular divisions of the Guangdong Modern Dance Festival among young dancers, featuring artistic directors, senior choreographers, and principal dancers from both domestic and international dance troupes. This year, Daniel Moret Chanzá, Cristian Colatriano and other dance professionals will conduct teaching activities. Furthermore, from November 19 to 24, choreographers and dancers participating in the dance festival will engage in artistic discussions, sharing the stories behind their creations with dance enthusiasts.
