Enjoy global art beat at Guangzhou Opera House

The 2024 New Year Season of the Guangzhou Opera House is currently in full swing, running until February 4, 2024. The repertoire includes an array of domestic and international musicals, concerts, dances, and ballets, offering a continuous feast of exceptional performances.

Musicals

"The Sound of Music" stands as one of the most beloved Broadway musicals on the international stage, with many of its songs having achieved widespread acclaim, such as "Do-Re-Mi," "The Lonely Goatherd," and "Edelweiss." From January 17 to 22, this musical will be brought to the Guangzhou stage for the third time, directed by Tony Award-winning director Jack O'Brien, breathing new vitality into this timeless classic.

The musical I AM WHAT I AM will have its global premiere, featuring the participation of China's Hong Kong actor and singer Jordan Chan Siu-chun and Singaporean singer Kit Chan. Adapted from the animated film of the same name, this musical focuses on the lion dance culture and local customs, showcasing the inspiring story of an ordinary boy breaking barriers, overcoming adversity, and relentlessly pursuing his dream.

New Year Concerts

On December 29, the National Symphony Orchestra of "Teleradio-Moldova" Company will take the stage. Led by their artistic director and chief conductor Gheorghe Mustea, the orchestra will present classics of the Strauss family.

Under the baton of Greek conductor Dimitris Botinis, the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra will present the enchanting excerpts from Sergei Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" suite and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" suite.

Renowned conductor Lan Shui and French piano master Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, together with the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, will deliver two New Year concerts, showcasing the exquisite compositions of Edward Elgar, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Felix Mendelssohn, and others, while extending heartfelt New Year blessings to the audience.

Dance dramas

The Irish dance production "Riverdance" combines Irish dance, music, and opera. The dancers' rapid footwork, achieving a remarkable 35 beats per second, creates a miraculous spectacle. With their unique strength, dynamism, and elegance, the performers promise to bring the audience an awe-inspiring artistic feast.

Flamenco, originating from Spain, integrates various art forms such as dance, singing, and instrumental music. The Spanish Ballet of Murcia will present their classic production "Carmen."

The dance drama "Five Stars Rise in the East" is inspired by the brocade armband discovered at an archaeological site. It depicts a touching story about the deep friendship between a military leader and two young people in the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - 220 A.D.).

"Awakening Lion", a dance drama created by the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theater, tells the story of A Xing and Long Shao, who are rivals in a lion dance competition. When war strikes, the death of Feng Er, the heroine, makes them work together to protect their homeland.

Ballet

In December, St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre, led by their principal dancers, will enchant the audience with performances of "The Nutcracker" and "Swan Lake." Similarly, the Moscow Ballet Theatre will present "Swan Lake" as well in January 2024.

The ballet The Legend of the White Snake, created by the Guangzhou Ballet, is inspired by one of the most well-known folktales in China, about a white snake named Bai Suzhen, who transforms into a beautiful woman, and her romance with her husband Xu Xian. It combines elements of classical ballet and traditional Chinese dance, as well as utilizes artistic expression by means of sketch shows and puppet shows.
