Venues welcome return of audiences with new year spectaculars

"This concert was wonderful. I enjoyed it. I hope to experience more of the art atmosphere in Guangzhou," said Frank van Beuningen, Acting Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands after watching the "Lawrence Ku Trio" which served as the curtain raiser for the Guangzhou Jazz Festival 2022 at the Xinghai Concert Hall on December 13. 

With 2023 right around the corner, the stages in Guangzhou will usher in their New Year seasons with a series of spectaculars. Concerts, jazz performances, ballets, dance dramas, musicals, and more are awaiting audiences' returning for live performances.

New Year Season at Guangzhou Opera House

With the theme "Regather, Rejoice, Restart", the 2023 New Year Season of Guangzhou Opera House will take place from December 16, 2022 to January 12, 2023. A wide range of genres including dance, theatre, opera, and musicals will be presented in 11 outstanding shows, and more than half of these shows will be new productions or world premieres.

Renowned young dancer Li Xing will perform with the top street dance studio "HelloDance" to present the dance theater: The Station. This world premiere will be presented at the Guangzhou Opera House on December 16 and 17, kicking off the 2023 New Year Season.

The new dance drama Wing Chun, directed by Han Zhen and Zhou Liya, is the highlight of the New Year's Eve shows. This dance drama, which will be staged on December 29, focuses on Lingnan Martial Arts and depicts the essence of martial arts through dance.

On top of that, other great shows are not to be missed. They include the Chinese version of Monte Cristo Musical Drama: Compendium of Materia Medica, a chamber version of G. Donizetti's one-act comic opera "Rita", the drama "Two Capitals, Fifteen Days", "The Nutcracker" by Guangzhou Ballet, and the piano recital by Yin Zhi.

2023 New Year Music Season at Xinghai Concert Hall

Starting from now to next January, Xinghai Concert Hall is presenting its annual New Year Music Season with 19 shows, including jazz performances, parent-child theaters, piano performances, and more.

The Guangzhou Jazz Festival 2022 is underway with a total of 15 performances. More than 30 jazz musicians, including Lawrence Ku, Huang Yong, Kong Hongwei, Xu Zhitong, Rong Chenchu, and Ye Huang, are invited to present performances in various forms and styles, such as popular jazz and percussion music. The festival also offers residents an immersive and diverse experience of jazz culture through various lectures, activities, and workshops. 

Furthermore, several concerts will also be available on-demand through the platform "Tencent Art (腾讯艺术)", and you can enjoy jazz both online and offline.

Chinese pianists Chen Sa and Rao Hao will also stage a piano recital on December 28 and December 26 respectively at the concert hall. On  New Year's Eve, Xinghai Concert Hall and Guangdong National Orchestra will jointly present the New Year Chinese Music Gala, which has become a major event on the city's festival calendar.

New year music performances at Guangdong Friendship Theater

As the New Year is coming, a festive, elegant, and cultured New Year concert will definitely make this festival memorable for everyone. This year, the Guangdong Friendship Theater presents you with several exciting concerts in celebration of the New Year. 

On the evening of December 30, Shi Jin, a pianist and composer, will present his classic masterpiece series Melody of the Night along with tracks from his latest album released in November 2022.

The "Voices of Spring Waltz: 2023 Guangzhou Children's New Year Symphony Concert", a symphony concert for children, will be held on December 31. The concert features a selection of familiar favorites for kids, including Radetzky March, the Blue Danube, the Voices of Spring Waltz, and theme songs from animations, such as Totoro, Frozen, and Zootopia.

On New Year's Eve, the "Radetzky March: 2023 Guangzhou New Year Concert" will be staged. Composed by Johann Strauss Sr., Radetzky March features contrasting elements and a combination of powerful and gentle rhythms. It has been loved by music enthusiasts for generations.

In addition, there will be a "Harry Potter" New Year Candlelight Concert of Classic Film Masterpieces on New Year's Day, featuring theme songs and soundtracks from films such as Harry Potter, Frozen, The Lion King, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
