Guangzhou Jazz Festival 2022 on Ersha Island

The Guangzhou Jazz Festival 2022 will kick off on December 13, with a total of 15 performances. Come to Ersha Island to enjoy jazz!

More than 30 jazz musicians, including Lawrence Ku, Huang Yong, Kong Hongwei, Xu Zhitong, Rong Chenchu, and Ye Huang, are invited to present performances in various forms and styles, such as popular jazz and percussion music. The festival also offers residents an immersive and diverse experience of jazz culture through various lectures, activities, and workshops.

Furthermore, several concerts will also be available on-demand through the platform "Tencent Art (腾讯艺术)", and you can enjoy jazz both online and offline.

Here are some highlights of the festival.

The "Lawrence Ku Trio", led by Lawrence Ku, one of the most influential musicians in the Chinese jazz community and top guitarist, will serve as the curtain raiser for the Guangzhou Jazz Festival 2022. Lawrence Ku, together with his outstanding music partner Fred Grenade, a bassist from Mauritius, and drummer Xu Zhitong, will light up the music festival.

A lawn concert featuring the fusion of jazz, Latin music and traditional Chinese folk songs will be held on December 18, led by Benoit Stasiaczyk, a French composer and director of the Department of Modern Instrumental Music of the School of Modern Music and Drama of Xinghai Conservatory of Music. Audiences can enjoy original masterpieces by Stasiaczyk, such as Valso por lilia and rap-akustika, his adaptation of the Sichuan folk song "The love song of Kangding", as well as the works of Chick Corea, a legendary jazz pianist and composer.

On December 21, Ye Huang, the music director of Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai (JALCSH) Big Band, American drummer Charles Foldesh, Australian bassist Harrison Wardley, and young jazz organist and pianist Hao Zeng will form a quartet to perform a series of wonderful original works.

The ChuChuVibes-Duet, comprising Rong Chenchu, a young percussionist and composer, and pianist Feng Yuwei, will bring two jazz concerts for kids on December 24. A series of adapted classic pieces such as "Alice in Wonderland", "Libertango", and "Ode to Joy" will guide children to discover the fascination and attraction of percussion and piano.

In addition, the Guangdong National Orchestra will make its debut at this festival. Liu Wenwen, a suona soloist, and Hu Jianqiang, the principal player of the trumpet section of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra (GSO), will together create a wonderful vibe with jazz and other types of music.

It is reported that this Jazz Festival will be extended to 2023 with more surprising shows, encompassing the live performances of Mr. Miss Band and GSO.
