According to Nanfang daily, GUANGDONG's 37th "Bird Watching Week", with this year’s theme being bird protection, is running from today, March 20th, until the 26th.
The opening ceremony has already been held, at one of the most popular bird watching sites in the province,Nansha Wetland Park.
During the week, bird and plant spotting competitions are being held for primary students in Haizhu district, with the aim of improving their awareness of environmental protection.
The forestry bureau are starting to conduct specific examinations of flowers and bird markets as well as wild birds’ local habitat. Illegal hunting and trade of wild birds is being strictly cracked down on.
Guangdong has led this campaign for 36 years running, (since 1981). Statistics show that 272 cases were reported by citizens, with a total of 37.8 thousand wild animals were saved shelterd in 2017.

Meanwhile, the 10 best locations for watching birds in Shenzhen were revealed. The locations include Shenzhen Bay Park, Guangdong Neilingding Futian National Nature Reserve, OCT Wetland Park, Wutong Mountain Scenic Area, Bijia Hill Park, Honghu Park, Zhongshan Park, Yuanshan Scenic Area, Futian Mangrove Ecological Park and Dapeng Agriculture and Science Center.
The 10 locations were selected by the Shenzhen Bird Watching Society, after it analyzed the monitoring data of bird species in Shenzhen from the past 10 years and collected opinions from many bird watchers, according to Szdaily.
The best seasons for residents to watch birds in Shenzhen Bay Park are winter and spring, when the tide at the park is lower than 1.2 meters. Over 200 kinds of birds, such as black-faced spoonbills, herons, egrets and black-headed gulls, have been recorded in the park. Nearly one-tenth of the black-faced spoonbills in the world fly to the park to stay the winter.

1. Nansha Wetland Park
Nansha Wetlands attracts more than 100,000 migratory birds, accounting for more than 50% of Guangzhou’s migratory bird population, to perch every winter in the wetlands. The number of bird species recorded in Nansha Wetlands has reached 153.
2.Liuhuahu Park
Night herons, little grebes, mallards, spot-billed ducks and necklace doves all visit Lu Island - within the park - throughout the year.
3. Haizhu Wetlands
Located along the flight passage way for bird migration, Haizhu Wetlands, with its rich plant resources, is an important stopover site and habitat for migratory birds flying south. About 90 species of birds migrate to Haizhu Wetlands, including grey herons, night herons and egrets.
4.Baiyun Mountain Scenic Area
Baiyun Mountain Scenic Area has become a local haven for wild birds, especially songbirds. Well-known thrush, red-whiskered bulbuls and pycnonotus sinenses can be seen everywhere in the area. Many wild birds such as necklace doves and oriental turtle doves have established stable habitats and are breeding and multiplying on Baiyun Mountain.
