Protecting wildlife: Guangdong in action

With superior geographic location and humid climate conditions, Guangdong province is endowed with rich and diverse wildlife resources. According to the latest statistics, Guangdong recorded 1,018 species of terrestrial vertebrate wild animals and 6,654 species of higher plants.

Guangdong has strengthened the protection of animals and plants in recent years. It has taken the lead in formulating local laws and regulations to ban the consumption of terrestrial wild animals, and launching a List of Guangdong Key Protected Terrestrial Wild Animals. It has also established a comprehensive inter-departmental joint meeting system to combat illegal wildlife trade, carried out in situ and ex situ protection of rare and endangered species, and organized artificial breeding, wild training, and return.

At present, the population of wild fauna and flora in Guangdong is growing steadily. More than 20 species such as white crane, spoon-billed sandpiper, and Paphiopedilum purpuratum orchid have been newly distributed in the province.
