All 176 towns, sub-districts in Guangzhou have public libraries

On the occasion of the 27th World Book Day (April 23), Guangzhou Library released an annual report on the development of Guangzhou's public libraries. According to the statistics, by the end of 2021, all 176 towns and sub-districts in the city had set up public libraries (branch libraries).

The report shows that in 2021, the number of books borrowed in Guangzhou was 32.72 million, with a per capita number of 1.74. Nearly 31 million volumes of books were collected by public libraries in Guangzhou by the end of 2021, up 4.98 percent year on year.

A total of 694 public libraries (branch libraries), service points, and self-service libraries have adopted a coordinated lending and return system (through which people can borrow or return books at any public library), up 128 from the previous year.

There are more than 4 million registered readers in the city. 18,258 online and offline reader activities were held, with 21.5 million participants. In addition, the number of downloads and views of digital resources reached 158.41 million times.

According to the report, children and young readers have become the main target of the city's public library services. In 2021, the number of children's books borrowed from public libraries was 20.87 million; 10,375 online and offline activities for young readers were held, with about 6 million participants.

Meanwhile, Guangzhou's public libraries, schools, and other social forces have jointly built 104 branch libraries. These branch libraries and 166 school libraries are all included in the citywide coordinated lending and return system.
