Recently, three more Guangdong universities, including South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou Medical University, and Southern University of Science and Technology are added to the National “Double First-Class Initiative”, which means they will win more supports from the country for further development.
The new list was released by the ministries of education and finance and the National Development and Reform Commission on February 14. Constructing first-class universities and first class disciplines is the major strategic decision by the Central Committee of CPC and the State Council.
At present, 8 universities and 21 disciplines in Guangdong have been listed in this Initiative.
According to Hong Dayong, director of the Ministry of Education's department of degree management and postgraduate education, the universities and disciplines were chosen based on their ability to nurture top talent and innovative teams in major and core scientific and technological fields in accordance with national development strategies.
