GBA Close-up | ‘Spider-Men’ who safeguard the beauty of Golden Mountain

Tang Jinying and Hu Guangyong are sanitation workers at the picturesque Golden Mountain in the city of Qingyuan.

Both at their 50s, Tang and Hu need to work at height, or more specifically, to to pick up litter thrown on the cliffs by tourists. Because of this, Tang and Hu earned themselves a nickname: “Spider-men”. Not battling actual villains, though, they keep this corner of the world clean and beautiful.

Sitting near the shared border area of Guangdong, Hunan, and Guangxi province, the Golden Mountain scenic area covers around 1000 hectares, and its peak reaches 1,417 meters. The beautiful and tranquil mountain is a hot place for many tourists.

Tang and Hu normally start their work at 8 o’clock when sometimes the temperature is only 6 degree Celsius. They do sweeping and mopping before lunch break, and in the afternoon they suit up and become ‘superhero’ on the cliffs.

Besides cleaning work, sanitation workers, including Tang and Hu, are responsible for directing tourists, and persuade tourists not to smoke or drop litter in the scenic area.

Their advocacy seems to have paid off, as more and more tourists now bring their own garbage bags for litter. And, some tourists volunteered to help collect trash and bring it down the mountain. We are happy to see these improvements, said the 'Spider-men' with their humble smile.
