The annual Chelsea Flower Show is underway in London in the United Kingdom (UK) from September 21 to September 26, which, due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, is the first time that the event is held in autumn.

At this Show, the "Guangzhou Garden" organized and constructed by China's Guangzhou was officially unveiled to show the world the cultural heritage of Chinese gardens and convey the concept of China's ecological civilization construction.

The Garden was designed by Peter Chmiel, a gardening design expert and the founder of the famous British design firm Grant Associates. Inspired by a study tour of Guangzhou, a "city between mountain and water", Peter Chmiel designed the garden on the basis of a philosophy reconnecting people and nature in a mutually beneficial relationship.

In this Show Garden, the woodland dell (lung) cleans the air; the pool (kidney) cleans water and bamboo-laminated grid shell structure (heart) provide social spaces for humans and homes for nature. The structures, inspired by a fusion of architecture and nature, have been made from pressed, laminated, steamed and bent moso bamboo.

Providing a narrative on ecosystems in harmony with city life, the garden looks towards a future ecological civilization where sustainable landscape cities cater for the needs of people and nature in balanced harmony with spiritual abundance for all.

Guangzhou Garden is China's third independent garden show at the Chelsea Flower Show. As the most eye-catching Chinese element of this year's flower show, Guangzhou Garden contains Guangzhou's unique natural layouts of mountains, waters, cities, fields and seas, featuring the charm of Chinese Lingnan garden culture.

Inspired by the holistic landscape stewardship programme of environmental planners in Guangzhou, the garden features a woodland dell for cleaner air, a pool of water and shelters providing a social space for people to gather as well as a home for wildlife.

Characterful trees including dawn redwood, scots pine, field maple and birch make up the woodland edge to capture the particulate matter. Sedges, euphorbia and ferns are a horizontal carpet punctuated with accent plants that help to clean water and air. The effect is an elegant, graceful drifting wave of green foliage plants including airy frothy perennials in soft shades of white and subtle hints of blue and yellow. The water running through the entire garden represents the Pearl River.
