Data Explorer | Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge celebrates 5 years since opening

Over the past five years, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge has played a crucial role in deepening the cooperation among cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The Bridge has seen 36 million people and 7.5 million vehicles crossing the Zhuhai Port back and forth since its opening on October 23, 2018, according to the latest statistics from the border inspection station.

Among the 36 million people, the total number of Hong Kong and Macao residents has reached 19.8 million, accounting for 55 percent of the total.

The one-hour living circle in the GBA has taken shape. The traveling time is shortened to 45 minutes from Hong Kong to Zhuhai and Macao via the Bridge. Currently, the average inbound and outbound passenger throughput is about 50,000, making Zhuhai Port the first choice for Hong Kong and Macao tourist groups.

Besides, the 24-hour customs clearance service at Zhuhai Port has made the Bridge one of the logistics hubs in the GBA, and over 1.595 million trucks have undergone border inspection in the past five years.

During the same period, the total import and export volume of goods at Zhuhai Port reached 718.75 billion RMB (as of the end of September 2023). In fact, the types of goods are becoming more and more diversified, including aircraft engines, gold jewelry, integrated circuits and new energy vehicles.

So far, the destinations of the import and export goods from Zhuhai Port have covered 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in the Chinese mainland. Furthermore, the number of countries and regions has increased from 105 in 2018 to 239 in 2023.
