If you want to seize the summer and have a joyful outdoor run, these places in Guangdong are perfect for you. We have listed top 10 running locations and breakdowns of some of the best routes.

Guangzhou

1. Huacheng Square (花城广场)

Located within Guangzhou's CBD, Huacheng Square is one of the city's larger civic squares and has always been a popular place for an after-work run. Surrounded by green paths, the area is lit up at night and the surface is comfortable and flat, even suitable for barefoot running. Some running groups have weekly runs here, with professional coaches on hand to lead warm-ups and post-run stretching activities. Come here to run at night and feel the pulse of the city!

Recommended route: GT Land Plaza (高德置地) → Huangcheng Square Greenway (花城广场绿道) → Linjiang Avenue (临江大道) → turn back under the Hua'nan Bridge (华南大桥) → Linjiang Avenue → Huangcheng Square Greenway → GT Land Plaza.

2. Ersha Island (二沙岛)

Ersha Island is a natural oasis in the heart of the city, surrounded by the Xinghai Concert Hall, the Guangdong Museum of Art and a variety of art sculptures in the vast greenery, giving it an artistic and literary vibe. If you come here at night to run, you can not only enjoy the breeze and the beautiful scenery on both sides of the river, but also stop by the river to listen to the live performances of wandering singers or to look out over the glittering bustle of Zhujiang New Town.

Recommended route: Hongcheng Garden (宏城公园) → Qingbo Road (晴波路)→ Qinglan Road (晴澜路) → Hongcheng Garden

3. Haizhu Lake Park (海珠湖公园)

Haizhu Lake is the "ecological green axis" of the southern section of Guangzhou's central axis. Dogs are not allowed in the park, nor are vehicles, including bicycles, so there are no disturbances. It closes at 10pm. The lighting here is bright at night with no dark corners. It is a 2.6km loop around the park, which is ideal for beginners.

4. Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center (广州大学城)

The distance of the outer ring of Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center is 16.5km, about a third of a full marathon. So, it is particularly suitable for training in preparation for a long-distance running. The route is relatively lightly trafficked and there are paths along the lanes dedicated to running.

Shenzhen

5. Fairy Lake Botanical Garden (仙湖植物园)

Fairy Lake Botanical Garden is located in the northeastern suburb of Shenzhen, leaning against Wutong Mountain (梧桐山), the highest peak in Shenzhen, to the east and the Shenzhen Reservoir to the west. It is a famous botanical garden and scenic area with scientific research, popular science and tourism as a whole and no admission fee is required.

6. Shenzhen Bay Park (深圳湾公园)

Shenzhen Bay is the inner bay in the centre of Shenzhen. Walking or jogging along the waterfront promenade, you can feel the breeze of the summer night. Occasionally you will encounter cyclists playing music passing by, the beautiful music adds a classical touch to a beautiful night. The 15-kilometre-long waterfront promenade of Shenzhen Bay and the mangroves and bird sanctuaries form a beautiful and charming coastal scenery.

Zhuhai

7. Lover's Road (珠海情侣路)

As Zhuhai's signature romantic spot, Lovers' Road is paved along the coast, twisting and winding. Along the way, it passes by famous scenic tourist spots such as the Grand Bay Hotel (海湾大酒店), Jiuzhou Port (九洲港) and the statue of Zhuhai Fishing Girl (珠海渔女).

Recommended route: Starting from Gongbei Yuehua Garden (拱北粤华花园), the tour will pass by attractions mentioned above.

Foshan

8. Qiandeng Lake (千灯湖公园)

Qiandeng Lake is one of the largest free parks in Foshan. The park is home to more than 1,300 pagoda lights, pillar lights, corridor lights and spotlights, which are the origin of the name Qiandeng, literally meaning thousand lanterns. Whether in the daytime or at night, you can enjoy running or jogging in the beautiful scenery dotted with green trees, tea pavilions and streams. The course is approximately 5km around the lake.

9. Huizhou West Lake (惠州西湖风景名胜区)

10. Zhanjiang River Seascape Long Corridor (湛江观海长廊)
