Member of YPC: Chinese music holds varieties compared to Western music

On October 8, 2024, a delegation of 39 American youth from the Young People's Chorus of New York City (YPC) continued their tour of Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province.

The delegation visited the Guangdong Experimental Middle School Choir and exchanged their ideas on music education and will have a joint performance with the Guangdong Experimental Middle School Choir.

Sylvie Suskin, a 15-year-old member of the Young People's Chorus of New York City, shared her own perspective as a young musician after arriving in China. She told GDToday that she found herself intrigued by the interesting variety between Chinese and Western music.

While visiting different rehearsal rooms at Guangdong Experimental Middle School, she experienced firsthand the traditional Chinese orchestra.

"I'm really just looking into the differences, because while there are a lot of similarities between Chinese music and Western music, there are so many other varieties," she said. "Chinese history is just so much longer, which is so cool."

As a student taking a Chinese course right now, she also felt excited to use the language beyond the textbook to interact with new Chinese friends and experience diverse culture in China.
