Editor's Note: The 2023 Beijing Culture Forum, the second of its kind, will kick off in the Chinese capital on September 14. The two-day event focuses on advancing fine culture and promoting exchanges and will see a main forum, five sub-forums, and several related cultural activities. GDToday is presenting a series of interviews with cultural celebrities to give you a glimpse of the upcoming forum and the latest cultural development in China.

"All cultures in the world are interwoven with one another. They thrive through exchanges and grow through mutual learning. Only in this way can we achieve the shared prosperity of all cultures," said Liu Tong, national first-grade screenwriter and president of the Jingju Theater Company of Beijing.

He introduced that the theater created a new Peking Opera play named "The Miser". It is based on a famous play of the same name by M. Molière a renowned French playwright of the 17th century, and it adopts the character design and stage performance with the techniques of the Peking Opera.

"This effective fusion of Eastern and Western cultures in the form of Peking Opera enables it to play an important role in promoting cultural exchanges between China and France."

Liu placed special emphasis on the necessity for traditional operas to resonate with today's aesthetics and core values.
