There are now more than 290 million migrant workers in China, many of whom have low levels of literacy and low-wage jobs. Some of them are faced with problems such as wage arrears while others gave up the right to buy social security, trying to save a few hundred more RMB.
Visiting different factories and talking to the migrant workers from around China takes up all the leisure time of Su Ronghuan, an environmental engineer of the Foshan-based company Zhihui Blue Sky Environmental Protection Technology.
Su is a farmer’s son who left his village to work for a better life in the city. He was elected as a deputy to the National People's Congress in 2018, since when he maintained close communication with migrant workers and fulfilled his duty to protect their interests and rights.
Over the past 6 years, Su has made more than 60 motions and proposals that shed light on the treatment that migrant workers should enjoy in the city regarding medical services and education.
His works did facilitate changes. In August 2019, the Migrant Worker Work Department of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security wrote him a response on migrant workers’ social security issue, and before long, the State Council passed the regulations on the protection of migrant workers' wage payment.
Check out Su's story as he explains in detail how he works as an NPC deputy.
