Guangdong, China's economic powerhouse, has made remarkable achievements in its new energy industry. Guangdong announced the new energy industry as its ninth trillion-yuan industrial cluster on March 6 at the open day event of the Guangdong delegation in Beijing during China's ongoing third session of the 14th National People's Congress.
"Guangdong is a global powerhouse in both the green and digital revolution," Erik Solheim, Former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director, shared with GDToday his comments and expectations for the development of Guangdong’s new energy industry.
Global powerhouse in green and digital revolution
The province has a thriving new energy industry cluster, which is based on leading new energy-related companies such as BYD, Huawei, Tencent, and DJI. Solheim said that BYD, a major driver of the green revolution, has risen to become one of the world's top electric vehicle brands. Huawei and Tencent are crucial players in the digital revolution, while DJI dominates the global drone market. These companies, along with many others in the cluster, have contributed to Guangdong's success in the new energy sector.
He said "we are amid two major global technological revolutions: the green revolution of electric cars, batteries, solar panels, and much more, and the digital revolution, particularly artificial intelligence."
The rise of Guangdong's new energy industry is supported by the region's strong manufacturing base, innovative environment, and favorable government policies. “Guangdong has much to offer in the convergence and integration of these two revolutions,” he pointed out.
Expectation of a new level, new energy transition in Guangdong
As the world looks to transition to cleaner energy sources, Guangdong's expertise will play a vital role in shaping a sustainable future. Solheim shares his expectation of the future of the new energy industry in the province, saying "Guangdong will help humanity take energy use to a completely new level, where we will find less energy is used because we are more efficient."
In the future, fossil fuels may be abandoned or drastically reduced, which will also reduce many other sorts of negative effects of energy. Guangdong strongly performs in the new energy revolution from electric vehicles, integrating with artificial intelligence and other innovations.
“Frankly, I can see no other spot on the planet Earth, other than the Pearl River Delta (Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Macao and other cities), which can help us in that transition,” he added.
