Thailand celebrates Chinese artistic legacies to this date: Thai art scholar

Thailand, reputed as the "Land of Smiles," has become a popular tourist destination that embraces profound cultural vibrancy. As published data by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand shows, in 2023 alone, the nation has registered around 28.15 million tourist arrivals.

One is always pleasantly surprised to find out Thailand is a country rich in culture and history, with Buddhism being one of the centerfolds of its society. Inside the multiple distinctive Buddhist temples within the country, it is easy to find traditional cultural elements incorporated in different forms of art.

Strong Chinese cultural influence could be felt from the imagery in these temples - glass paintings, murals, ceramic sculptures and wooden doors.

How did all this Chinese traditional imagery make its way to Thailand? And how did Chinese ancient arts bring influence to Thai culture? GDToday spoke to Professor Achirat Chaiyapotpanit at Silpakron University to find out more.
