Malaysian MP: China's system of people's congresses drives good governance

"We learned during our visit that at the county and township levels of people's congresses, Chinese people have the direct right to elect their deputies. This is something that I believe Western media have never highlighted," said Cha Kee Chin, chairman of the Special Select Committee on Domestic Trade, Entrepreneurship, Cost of Living, and Agriculture in the Parliament of Malaysia.

In late November, a delegation of parliamentarians and senior parliamentary officials from seven ASEAN countries completed a 10-day tour of China. The group visited Beijing, Nanning in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and Guangzhou in Guangdong Province. The delegation aimed to gain firsthand insights into China's modernization efforts and governance practices.

What insights did they gain into China's governance? How do they view China's cooperation with their countries? And what are the prospects for future collaboration? GDToday spoke with Cha Kee Chin, a member of the delegation, to learn more.
