The Lantern Festival (元宵節) is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the 15th day of the first month of the Chinese calendar. It marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. This year, it falls on February 12th.
The festival is celebrated with a variety of customs that highlight family bonds and cultural heritage. One of the most iconic traditions is the making and eating of Yuanxiao. Yuanxiao is a type of glutinous rice ball filled with various fillings, symbolizing family togetherness and harmony. Its traditional fillings include black sesame and peanuts. However, as times move forward and cultural exchanges increase, while these classic flavors have been passed down through generations and remain favorites for many, modern tastes are also making their mark.
How do you choose from endless Yuanxiao flavors? Follow GDToday reporter and Sophie on a taste test! Whether it's traditional black sesame or modern takes like durian, coffee, and chocolate—there's no flavor out of reach!
