China's Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence helps build a more equitable and multilateral world: American expert

"By articulating and building towards the community with a shared future, China has offered the world, especially the Global South, not only a vision that carries forward the spirit of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, but also real solutions for peace and development through the Belt and Road Initiative and other global initiatives," said Josef Gregory Mahoney, Professor of Politics and International Relations at East China Normal University.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. On June 28 and 29, 1954, China issued two joint statements with India and Myanmar, respectively, confirming their commitment to the five principles, which include mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual nonaggression, noninterference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence.

In an interview with GDToday, Mahoney shed light on the five principles' significance to today's world and how the principles differ from the US' conception of world order.
