Recently, the ultra-tall hybrid rice variety "Julong-8" has been successfully planted in Taishan, Jiangmen, Guangdong Province. This non-genetically modified rice, a new member of the rice family, is notable for its large panicles, high biomass, and great potential for high yields. The plants can reach a height of 1.8 to 2 meters, with an estimated yield of about 800 kilograms of rice per mu (0.067 hectares) and approximately 3,000 kilograms of fresh rice straw per mu.
This giant rice variety is classified as a national standard high-quality rice, with a soft, fragrant quality and excellent taste. Its straw serves as high-quality silage and a raw material for papermaking, weaving, construction, and even brewing. This giant rice is tolerant of saline-alkaline conditions, drought, submergence, and infertility, and has low fertilizer requirements. It is widely adaptable and will play a special role in the reclamation and utilization of coastal beaches and saline-alkali soils in Guangdong Province.
The cultivation of giant rice can be integrated with the farming of fish, softshell turtles, shrimp, frogs, eels, loaches, and ducks, promoting a stereoscopic and ecological cultivation model that achieves "a double harvest in both farming and breeding in rice paddies." In terms of the integration of agriculture and tourism, it holds the potential to create an agritourism project where visitors can "enjoy the cool under the rice panicles," paving a new "rice" path towards a prosperous and beautiful countryside in Taishan.
