Business Trends | Guangdong strives for promoting coordinated urban-rural development

The Guangdong Provincial High-quality Development Conference was held in Shenzhen on Feb. 18, the first working day after the Chinese New Year holiday. Officials, business leaders, and top scholars are gathering at the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center to discuss how to improve the high-quality development of Guangdong.

"The High-quality Development Project for Guangdong's Counties, Towns, and Villages" has become a hot topic this year. In order to narrow the gap between urban and rural areas, Guangdong published a series of measures and policies to support development in rural areas.

Through a variety of innovative measures, the income growth rate of rural residents in 2023 was 2.3%, higher than that of urban residents.

"The key to implementing 'The High-quality Development Project for Guangdong Counties, Towns, and Villages' is to further institutional innovation. For example, the autonomy of counties should be strengthened. In addition to finance, they should be given more autonomy in personnel, and in land management such as land planning," said Lin Huihuang, Associate Dean and Professor of the Institute of Public Policy of South China University of Technology. He believes that Guangdong Province has a great opportunity to develop a brand-new coordinated urban-rural and regional development model that can be used as a reference for the whole country.
