Fantastic! BIGGER Art Book Fair returns to Dongguan

On January 9, the 6th BIGGER Art Book Fair (Dongguan) officially opened at One Mall in Dongguan’s Nancheng District. Themed "Paper's charm comes from the east", the five-day event will run until January 13, featuring over 30 exciting art and cultural activities.

Over 100 artists gather in Dongguan

This year's art book fair offers a carefully curated lineup, including 1 art marketplace、8 thematic exhibitions spanning 15 zones、6 special content units、3 Co-creat projects、2 art installations, and over 10 talks and workshops. 

The fair brings together over 100 artists from 33 cities across 10 countries, presenting a cultural feast of knowledge and art for visitors. 

Notably, this year's BIGGER Art Book Fair has doubled both its exhibition area and the number of exhibitors in the art marketplace compared to last year. The expanded space accommodates more artists and vendors, creating a more vibrant atmosphere.

Prof.Kai Hartrampf, a professor from Germany at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, was invited to attend the BIGGER Art Book Fair with his students. What interested him most was the "MetroSung" exhibition. He is deeply passionate about typography and layout design, which are key focuses in his courses. He said, "It's truly worthwhile to see Ko Chi Kin's works here and to hear his thoughts on typography design. I believe it's something everyone can learn from."

Roger, a curator from Dongguan and representative of Youth Inspire, expressed his excitement about the fair's return. "Compared to last year, this expanded space feels like a breathing art ecosystem. As a Dongguan native, I’m proud to see more major exhibitions choosing Dongguan, a trendy and youthful city."

He Xiaohe, curator of Mint and Hot Spring from Beijing, participated in the BIGGER Art Book Fair for the first time. She shared, "Dongguan is a city with a unique charm, and I'm glad to showcase our works here."

International exhibitions debut in Dongguan

This year's fair emphasizes international and regional cultural exchange, showcasing artworks from Russia, France, Germany, and other countries. Several internationally renowned exhibitions are debuting in Dongguan, offering visitors a distinctive cultural experience.

Highlights include a collection of masterpieces by Henri Matisse, the celebrated Fauvist painter, offering a panoramic view of his iconic works from various periods.

Another standout is the poster exhibition by Igor Gurovich, marking the South China debut of his tour in the country.

The French publisher Éditions du Livre brings its immersive installation Butterfly Printer to Dongguan for the first time, creating a unique experiential space.

The opening day featured senior typography designer Ko Chi Kin sharing the story behind the creation of the classic typeface "MetroSung" in his talk, Words and Cities: The Tale of MetroSung.

Renowned Chinese young painter Wang Mengsha also held a book signing and shared insights into her creative journey. "This is my first exhibition in Dongguan, and I'm deeply inspired by the city's blend of novelty, unique charm, and vibrant life," Wang shared. "The exhibition provides a wonderful platform for meaningful exchange."

This marks the second consecutive year that the BIGGER Art Book Fair has been held in Dongguan, reflecting the city's dedication to cultural development and its ambition to create a "Trendy Dongguan" as a cultural brand.

As an emerging first-tier city, Dongguan has been actively fostering a strong cultural identity by integrating policies and resources to innovate new "reading + consumption" scenarios, continuously expanding the boundaries of trends and art.
