YPC Conductor: interacting with Chinese musicians has been educational

On October 8, 2024, a delegation of 39 American youth from the Young People's Chorus of New York City (YPC) continued their tour of Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province.

The delegation visited the Guangdong Experimental Middle School Choir to exchange ideas on music education and will have a joint performance with the choir.

While preparing in a beautifully designed choral room for the upcoming joint performance, Taylor Smith told GDToday he was impressed by the lovely design in the choral rehearsal room and described the interaction with local Chinese musicians as highly educational.

"We've been here in China seeing Chinese musicians and interacting with Chinese music educators, like Mr. Xie," he mentioned. "It has been amazing to understand their process, how they go about training their young singers, the tone that they provide, and how their rehearsals are scaffolded to build these really beautiful performances."

Taylor also noted that one of the most fascinating aspects of the visit to the school was the orchestra room, with instruments that are rare to find in the United States. "We are always looking for ways to elevate our performances, whether that's by bringing in instruments that we cannot play," he added.
