Micronesian president visits Guangdong, eyeing cooperation in business and sustainable development

President of the Federated States of Micronesia Wesley W. Simina visited south China’s Guangdong province from April 5 to 6. This is the first stop of Simina’s inaugural state visit to China.

On April 6, Simina visited Luen Thai Group in Dongguan city, as well as Hytera and Nanshan Energy Ecological Park in Shenzhen city.

Luen Thai Group has been doing business in Micronesia since 1972, according to Willie Tan, the company’s vice chairman. “We have investments there in fishing boats, freight ships, and cargo planes. Every week, our ships sail to the country,” Tan said.

Hytera is a global provider of professional communications technologies and solutions. Hu Bingshuang, deputy general manager of overseas sales at Hytera, told GDToday that Simina is interested in their products. “After establishing contact today, we are looking forward to extending our business to Micronesia in the future or seeing what we can help them with our technology and products,” Hu said.

Nanshan Energy Ecological Park is the last site Simina visited in Guangdong, which is a waste-to-energy plant and can incinerate over 2,300 tons of domestic waste per day in line with China’s strictest environmental discharge rules. “This is for the future,” Simina noted during the visit.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between China and Micronesia. After Guangdong, Simina will continue his China tour until April 12.
