In a surprise move Wednesday, Japanese PM Fumio Kishida announced he will not run in the upcoming party leadership vote next month.
Since the scandals of political donations broke in last November, Kishida has suffered dwindling support ratings that have dipped below 20%.
Kishida said he backed down to regain public trust in politics.
