At WorldSkills Lyon 2024, Guangdong's advanced manufacturing is taking center stage, particularly in the field of optoelectronic technology. As visitors walk around the competition's Optoelectronic Technology workshop, it's impossible to miss the Chinese characters on the workstations. These state-of-the-art setups, produced by Guangdong-based company Vcom, are a testament to the region's expertise in advanced manufacturing.

"Optoelectronics, as the name says, contains electronics. So, it's based on electronics," Günter Kapucian, Chief Expert of Team Austria, explains. Optoelectronics involves the use of electronic devices to control and manipulate light. It's a crucial technology for modern lighting systems, where light is integrated into buildings and rooms. Traditional light switches are replaced by sensors and detectors that automatically control lighting. For such advanced lighting control systems, specialized equipment is required. "For this, you need special equipment, as Vcom provides," Kapucian notes.

Vcom's Role in WorldSkills

Vcom, officially known as Guangdong Vcom Education Technology Co., Ltd., has been a global industry partner of WorldSkills since 2018. Wang Yanfeng, the general manager of Vcom, highlights the company's significant contribution to the event. "The Optoelectronic Technology behind me is a new project jointly initiated by China and Vcom," she explains. According to her, the initiator of a project sets the standards, and for the optoelectronic technology competition, Vcom provides the equipment, facilities, and technical support.

Wang emphasizes the core mission of the WorldSkills competition: to train applied talents. "China's intelligent manufacturing leads the world, especially in applied technologies," she states. This leadership is evident in the equipment provided by Vcom, which helps ensure that competitors have access to cutting-edge technology.

Global Recognition

The importance of advanced manufacturing in education and competition is echoed by Günter Kapucian, Chief Expert of Team Austria. He sees Guangdong's great manufacturing capability as the optoelectronic training devices at the event were assembled using carefully selected components from the region. "Without advanced manufacturing, we could not have educational material needed to educate young people for the future," Kapucian says. Vcom's workstations not only offer modern equipment but also ensure that young participants can engage with the latest technology. "They are providing us with cutting-edge new technology," Kapucian adds. He notes that the competition would not be possible without the technological support provided by companies like Vcom.
